This film is as much about the reality of post-war, post-fascist Italy and is rightly hailed as a masterpiece of the Italian neorealist cinema, a movement focusing primarily on the lives of ordinary people. It wond the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1950 and has freqently been high in the polls of greatest films of all time.
